Railroads crisscross the state, and very few towns ever survived without them.
The rich history of Kansas Railroads, tell the story of how the state evolved.
Our only purpose is to bring alive history of days long ago. Throughout American History, so much had given us our heritage, way of life or entertainment.
Kansas railroad history is in the same way. At one time in the life of Kansas, there were over 13,000 miles of railroad tracks. Now, not only a fourth of the miles remain.
Talk of so many miles of track through-out Kansas, there had to be more than a few railroads. How many railroads did exist through-out the history of Kansas.
So much of American History, outside of the state of Kansas, has kept me busy trying to learn it all. Goulash page, is just a collection of anything that I find interesting.
Hopefully from the various pages of this paper, I encourage the readers to submit items from their family or anything they find interesting. To submit items of interest, I wish for you to subscribe to KHQG. No information given will ever be given out. It’s only for us to verify who we are dealing with and to return communications’.

How many different railroads were ever in Kansas?
A new way of displaying railroads of Kansas. Starting with this month of May, 2025, I will try and change out a railroad every three months.
We will start with the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific CRIP.
After crossing over the Kansas River in Topeka, Kansas, we find it running West bound to an unknown destinations in the West. Steam generator popping off.
Special Trains of Kansas
Anything from a U.S. President’s Train, Circus, Wild West, or Demonstrators, they all cruised through.
The photo above is Union Pacific EMD E-9 #951, painted in the bicentennial paint scheme of 1976. This photo was taken by Merle T, Graves, as it travels East Bound by the Union Pacific Union Station in North Topeka, on January 14, 1976.
Santa Fe Railway itself had 5 units painted in the bicentennial paint scheme of their own. Most common from almost all major railroad of 1976. Union Pacific #951 is still hauling their presidential passenger trains today.
Topeka, the capital city of Kansas, has an unbelievable history and we will try and cover as much as we can. One of my favorite subject of Topeka, is the amusement park, “Vinewood Park”.
One of the more nationally important history, is the Brown vs Board of Education. Let’s talk about the decision and the museum’s located there.
So much more will be listed here.
County featured
On this page, we want to highlight a County, and their County Historical Society. Along with one of the county Ghost towns and any roadside historical markers. Each county has their own story to tell and we want to share the treasures.
Native American Nations, One of the most important thing we want to share, is the Native Americans Nations of Kansas. We will highlight one Nation per Quarter Their stories and history must be told.
Trains, Planes, Trucks, Automobiles, Bikes, Motorcycle or anything else that move us.
We all at one time or another, we have fallen in love with the various types of devises that move us. My favorite type is trains or railroad. Either models or the real ones, they excite me. But get me talking about futurists or concept cars, it has my full attention.

A large and Mighty locomotive such as #3463, sitting fore lore and waiting for the time to be brought back to it’s former glory.
Kaw Valley Rail Heritage Converservancy, KVRHC.org, to the rescue. Brett Perry and Mark Smelser, are working hard to get #3463 restored. Various projects are being planned to help promote and raised the needed funds. Won’t you help save our valuable heritage?
Family videos Should be saved for future generations.
I’ve had the pleasure of knowing John Hermes that does my video conversation to digital. He is by far the best price and never had any problems with his work. He usually has them back in the mail within a day or two after receiving them. Don’t wait until the films or VHS tapes go bad.

So much to learn, so little time to learn it.
Coming upon a third of the way through 2025, we have had many head shaking adjustments to make in everyday living. Living through the Pandemic, it’s so hard to believe the changes in life we had to make. With the event of 9/11 so many years ago, we are constantly reminded of the situation at our door steps. With Racial profiling and hate crimes are filling our news everyday. We have to remind ourselves that people that have gone before us, endured so many more hardships than we are living today. I really try and keep an open mind, for the plights of various groups of people and their suffering. To study their stories, may we come to the conclusion that we are only human and we have the power to change to a better world, than before.
So Sorry for the lack of start-up articles, videos and photos.
With a new program to learn and being caught with my pants down with the need of photos scanned and articles ready for placement, I’m running behind. I as the Publisher, have well over 40,000 slides, negatives and photos to share (reason for this website). I only want to share what I have and learned. In the past 40+ years, I have come across so much with Kansas and National history. This is a hobby, not a business. I currently have 97 videos on YouTube, but could have over 5,000 if I would sit down and work on them. I’ve recently came across four 7 inch films of rare railroad videos that I didn’t know I had (currently being digitized). When I have videos from a certain area, I always try and contact the local historical society and get them a copy. If my house would burn down, they are all gone with the wind.
My number one goal is to share what I have and make connections with other people with the same interests. I am members of several other websites that talk about history, but if you’re not on them 24/7, you miss so much, but they are great sites. This is the reason for being a quarterly website.
Another reason for this site not being filled, not being a techie, having to learn the various operations of this program (just sweep around me, I’ll catch up). Also to add to time, yard work and other grandfather duties, takes me away from working on this site.
